As I hone my approach to design in civic technology and community engagement, I revisit this working glossary.
I’m fluent in… which can look like…
Co-design methods in Civic Tech - centering the communities who use public services to design equitably together towards a more effective and transparent experience.
Curious? See my writing about Designed by Community with the New York Service Design Studio in the Mayor’s Office of Economic Opportunity.
UX primary research - conducting field work, interviewing, analyzing and synthesizing qualitative and quantitative data without losing the human story and nuance to inform strategic design.
Facilitating community engagement - being the face of outreach, designing workshops that meet community members where they’re at. This might look like starting and ending council meetings with movement and music to remind people of their agency, adding joyful and kind moments to a meeting to appeal to folk’s sometimes subconscious need for rest.
Youth programming - building out scaffolding so that young people can take on more responsibility to learn how they would like, communicating a message for young people that's clear enough for them see themselves in, and open enough for them to re-interpret it as they see fit, showing respect for their voice that is often ignored by adults and systems they navigate daily - being the point of contact and mentor for the young people participating. Assessing needs and connecting youth to resources based on their passions and curiosity.
Curious? Ask me about my life-changing work with teens in partnership with the Transformational Prison Project and Boston Public Schools for the Massachusetts Executive Office of Housing and Economic Development.
I’m comfortable in… which can look like…
Team Leadership - motivating and organizing team members to see their personal learning goals potential to grow alongside the project goals, making people feel comfortable to make mistakes and try bold moves, communicating reliable, consistent information as deadlines and project goals fluctuate.
Client Management - building trust, leading meetings and communication in an accessible and transparent way, helping individuals who lead a decision making team in a city department so that they can more easily find and prioritize where they can make changes to make their service more equitable for underserved.
Curious? Ask me about my work with the Cambridge Caregiver Council in influencing the Cambridge Department of Human Services Program.
Restorative Justice - stewarding restorative-justice ways of working through conflict and generating solutions together, holding circles with an emphasis on repair over punishment, keeping the safe container, sharing roles, guiding healing and imaginative threads.
I’m growing in… which can look like…
Creative Collaboration- facilitating methods like making and creative expression to bring ideas together and find new ways of approaching problems, making it easier to try artistic ways of working together.
Strategic Planning - helping individuals who work on a team feel interdependent, trusted, confident in why they do their work, have hope in a future they can each believe in, and take small actions together towards a bigger goal.
Curious? Ask me about my work with the Boston Children’s Hospital Neighborhood Partnerships team in developing their theory of change.
